Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche
Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche was born in Golok, Eastern Tibet in 1935. Recognized at an early age as a reincarnate lama (tulku), he received an unparalleled education in Tibet before leaving for India in 1958. He received transmission of important Tibetan Buddhist lineages from nearly 40 masters, including such extraordinary luminaries as Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, Adzom Gyalse Gyurme Dorje, Zhechen Kongtrul, and Tarthang Chogtrul. While in India he also received rare teaching transmissions from H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, H.H. Trulshik Rinpoche, and H.E. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, among others.
In 1969, Tarthang Tulku became the first lama of the Nyingma lineage to settle in the United States. He has written over 34 books that have been translated into various Western languages and adopted for class use by universities around the world. Among his many unique accomplishments, Tarthang Tulku is the founder of the Odiyan Buddhist Retreat Center and the Nyingma Monlam Chenmo World Peace Ceremony held annually at Bodh Gaya, India, where, since 1989, he has freely distributed more than five million sacred texts to lamas, monks, and nuns of the Tibetan community.

Kum Nye Relaxation
Based on the Tibetan medical system, Kum Nye Relaxation consists of exercises developed by Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche to relieve stress and promote the deep relaxation necessary to experience the full benefits of meditation. It is both a natural healing aid and a means for deepening meditation. An effective means to become fully comfortable in our embodiment, Kum Nye consists of breathing, massage, postures, and movement exercises that release blockages and allow energy to flow unobstructed through body and mind, restoring the wholeness of being.
Kum Nye integrates and balances physical and psychological approaches to harmonize the energies of body and mind. The deep relaxation produced releases a vibrant, intense flow of feeling that renders all experience richer, healthier, and more beautiful.
"The key to both our internal integration and a balanced relationship with the world lies within our feelings and sensations. We can nurture and heal both our bodies and minds by touching our feelings deeply and expanding the flowing rhythms they bring to us, for they are linked to the vitality of the universe itself. Through relaxation, we awaken feelings which then expand and accumulate until we slowly become aware of a deep, interpenetrating field of energy, inside our body and beyond it. This energy can stimulate itself internally to sustain and nurture us in our daily lives, recycling sensation so we become sensitive and strong, and our sensations rich and powerful. Our minds become clearer as well and we discover what it means to be balanced."

Nyingma Mandala
Founded by Tibetan Master Tarthang Tulku
The roots of the Nyingma Mandala in the West trace back to 1969, when Tarthang Tulku, a highly-trained lama in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, arrived in Berkeley California and established the Tibetan Nyingma Meditation Center (TNMC). TNMC is the spiritual center for all the activity that has followed in the decades since.
In the United States, the Nyingma Mandala includes centers in both Sonoma County and Berkeley California. In residence at Odiyan, Tarthang Tulku also oversees Dharma projects in India, the Himalayas, and the Tibetan region.
Nyingma Centers International oversees the blossoming mandala vision worldwide, manifest through our international organizations in Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as study groups in other countries.
The Great Transmission
The Great Transmission is the story of one Tibetan
refugee lama and his efforts to preserve the sacred texts of his tradition. But
more than that, it is the story of the epic journey of a precious inheritance
of human knowledge from its origins in Ancient India to the present.
